On Sunday afternoon Drs. Timothy Govers and Brian Speer taught the members about avian behavior, training, and proper handling of birds. The workshop started out with an informative lecture from Dr. Speer about avian behavior and proper humane handling. The workshop consisted of parakeets, lovebirds, cockatiels, conures, and a wide variety of parrots. After a short break students broke into three groups of six to learn about how to restrain a bird using a towel. Later the groups reconvened to spend some quality time with the birds and witness the incredible talents of two amazing avian veterinarians. Lastly, the members were taught five methods of getting a bird in a towel through various routes such as the butler, the potholder, the yoda, the toga, and the lap dance. Each student came out with a better understanding and appreciation for birds and avian medicine. We would like to thank Drs. Govers and Speer for donating their time, Pamela Lee and the dedicated Mickaboo volunteers for providing the amazing birds.
