On Saturday afternoon Drs. Munashe Chigerwe and Alana McQuarry taught the members how to handle potbellied pigs, trim hooves, and demonstrated a physical examination. The day started out early in the morning with an informative lecture from Dr. Chigerwe about basic husbandry, common illnesses, and the important role of a veterinarian in a pig's life. The hands-on laboratory section took place at the Weepy Willows Ranch in Yuba City, CA owned by Lynn Donaldson. The ranch is home to 21 potbellied pigs and 2 kune kunes. After a short lunch break students broke into two groups of six to learn about how to restrain a potbellied pig for a basic hoof trim and a physical examination demonstration. Later the groups reconvened to spend some quality time with the pigs and witness the incredible tricks of Wicky the kune kune. Lastly, the members were treated to a fantastic sight of a tusk trim procedure done on a male potbellied pig named Dolce. Each student came out with a better understanding and appreciation for potbellied pigs and livestock medicine. We would like to thank Drs. Chigerwe and McQuarry for donating their time and Lynn Donaldson for hosting our handling workshop.
