To start off Food Animal Month the Vet Aide Club at UC Davis headed down south to take a tour of the UC Davis Veterinary Medicine Teaching and Research Center in Tulare, CA. Dr. Terry Lehenbauer, Associate Professor and Director, gave an introductory lecture on the VMTRC programs and career opportunities in veterinary medicine. Afterwards, Dr. Greg Champagne, Dairy Medicine Clinician, presented an overview of the Dairy Production Clinical Rotations for veterinary students and went into detail about the role of food animal veterinarians in ensuring safety in our state's food supply. Lastly, a veterinary pathologist talked about the California Animal Health and Food Safety Lab and the important role it serves to our state in minimizing the occurrence of food related disease outbreaks. Then we ended our day at the VMTRC with a tour of the milk quality laboratory and clinical research facilities. All in all, it was worth driving 8 hours!
